Carbon[C] is one of the most important elements to life on planet Earth. It forms more compounds than any other element and is essential to all plant and animal life. Carbon is important to the existence of life, and is constantly cycled through the oceans, atmosphere, and all living plant and animal life, called the carbon cycle.

Carbon can be formed into different types. Graphite, charcoal and diamond are all different types of carbon. Graphite is the softest substance known, often used in pencils. Diamonds on the other hand is the hardest known natural material, where a big chunk of carbon that has been left under very high pressure for a long time and the atoms been pushed together to form a crystal. Diamonds are used in different kind of cutting tools but also more know as gemstones in jewelry. Carbon compounds store a lot of energy and are good at holding on to heat why it is used for charcoal.

Kol finns I flera olika former. Grafit, träkol och diamanter består alla av kol. Grafit är en mjuk form av kol, som ofta används i blyertspennor. Diamanter är däremot väldigt hårda och bildas genom att under under långt tid då kol påverkas av högt tryck och temperatur så att atomerna pressats samman och bildat en kristall. Diamanter använts ofta i olika typer av skärningsverktyg men även som ädelsten I juveler.

Kolföreningar kan lagra mycket energi och är bra på att hålla värme, varför träkol är så bra att grilla med. Atomnummer 6.
